The Animation Department at MassArt is pleased partner with MergingArts Productions to host WomAnimation! - the premiere showcase in the United States of women’s animated short films. Animation aficionados will enjoy a select program of twelve films from ten countries, culled from hundreds of submissions from across the globe.

These films, more personal than political, focus on the story-telling power of animation, while still presenting distinctively female perspectives. Themes may be deep and dark or light and fanciful, from complexities of gender roles, to coping with death, to strange worlds where logic takes a holiday. In the length of a typical 90-minute feature film, the films entertain and challenge the audience, with visual styles from stop motion to computer animation to 2D, frequently blending styles and materials to achieve distinctive looks.

The festival is free and open to students and the public. A slideshow introduces the filmmakers beforehand, with music by DJ Madame B, weaving soundscapes created by women across the globe. The audience votes for their favorite three films, with votes tallied to determine one winner. 

Womanimation! Encore Edition is a SWAN Day event; SWAN Day is an international holiday held in March designed to showcase the power and diversity of women’s creativity.
