Originally from Wales, Steve Hubback was a touring and

recording jazz and rock and roll percussionist throughout

the 1980s and signed his first record contract with Dossier

Records in Berlin.

Hubback started gong and cymbal making in 1990 in

Scandinavia. Within two years, Nordic musicians were

playing his unique instruments in a variety of settings. He has

pioneered distinctive gongs and cymbal sculptures, which

continue to influence generations of musicians and makers

today. Additionally, Hubback’s inventive site-specific work and

wearable metal instruments appear in performances and

parades worlwide.

For his residency in the Studio Foundation Brant Gallery,

Hubback will be displaying and playing instruments created

up until this very moment at MassArt. Some of these

instruments will be available for visitors to try out themselves!
