Background

Five years ago, our beloved friend, colleague, and brilliant artist Ekua Holmes brought the Roxbury Sunflower Project to life in Roxbury. Each year since, this gorgeous, community building, public art invitational has grown, nurtured by the collective care of many a citizen planter. Many of us - maybe you too! - had the pleasure of experiencing Radiant Community, Ekua’s community-built installation of nearly 3,000 sunflowers on the front lawn of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston last summer / fall.

The Roxbury Sunflower Project’s themes include: Radiance, Resilience, Deep Roots, Transformation, Planted Seeds, Light, and Beauty. Now in its fifth year, we in the Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP), in collaboration with Facilities, MAAM, and Artward Bound, are excited to bring the Roxbury Sunflower Project to MassArt!

Ekua has always believed that sunflowers represent resilience, self-determination, and a community’s ability to evolve and emerge while staying grounded in its history and traditions. As we continue living and making our way through multiple emergent moments, we plant, nurture, and harvest the love and care of life affirming gestures. We hope you will join us next week for this special rendition, in Roxbury, at MassArt, of the Roxbury Sunflower Project!
