Join us at MassArt x SoWa for FIRST FRIDAY, on April 7, 2023 from 5-9pm, with a live performance by Antony Flackett starting at 7:45!

After over 20 years of making instrumental electronic and sample-based music under the moniker of DJ Flack, MassArt Grad Alum (MFA ‘95 SIM) and video artist Tony Flackett has gone back to his guitar-playing roots. Flackett will perform 2 short sets of original songs influenced by Country, Punk and Hip-Hop. His lyrics tend toward humorous takes on odd subject matter. To augment his one-person band, he employs live drum machine looping, an 80’s Omnichord Synth and a vocal harmonizer.

April First Friday celebrates the gallery's first Graduate Faculty and Staff exhibition, Speculative Futurisms, on view through April 23, and curated by Kelsey Halliday Johnson of SPACE Gallery.

Much of the art of our time asks us to transcend the limiting concepts of past, present, and future. Our dreams of the future impact the now; careful hindsight helps us construct more just understandings of where we’re heading. Art asks us to be present in experience while moving through time in the stories and propositions it creates. To embody where we are going is a powerful practice, and the MassArt faculty and staff represented in this exhibition are reflecting this thinking in novel ways.
