The Process
Musicians enrolled in the Berklee InterArts Institute Seminar and artists from MassArt’s Resonating Bodies course met on the MassArt Campus. While listening to a range of sounds, such as gongs, singing bowls, bells, and more, each artist/musician intuitively made
marks on paper guided by the sounds they heard. Next, each Berklee musician was paired with 1 to 3 MassArt visual artists. Together, they cut, collaged, and reworked the mark-making exercise to create a graphic score. The musician then used this graphic score to compose a sound piece. A week later, MassArt visual artists received the Berklee sound compositions, and created new artworks inspired by their Berklee partners’ composition. Finally, Berklee musicians returned to MassArt where together we listened to the sound compositions and viewed the visual artworks.
