Please join the MassArt Photography Department as we showcase works by 2025 senior Gertrude Käsebier Prize recipient, Janeth Almendares '25!

El Corazón de Honduras will be on view in MassArt's North Crackatorium Gallery March 1 - 14, 2026. There will be a reception on Tuesday, March 10, from 4-6pm (following the Photo Department's annual Alumni Panel from 2-4pm in MassArt's Huntington Studio).

Janeth Almendares is an artist based and born in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated with a BFA in Photography at Massachusetts College of Art of Design in 2025. She often travels to and photographs Honduras, which is where her family is from. As the sole artist in her home, she explores her family dynamics by using photography. Capturing intimate moments and events has allowed her to become an active participant in moments where she would usually sit and observe. She received MassArt's Gertrude Käsebier Bosworth Prize in 2024 and the Gertrude Käsebier Senior Travel Prize in 2025.

Thanks to the generosity of a MassArt Photography Program supporter, the department has a set of prizes to offer to Photography majors each spring. As a whole, these prizes are known as the Gertrude Käsebier Prizes. Two are granted to extraordinary Photography sophomores, two are granted to excellent juniors, and one travel prize is granted to a uniquely accomplished graduating senior.

The senior applicants must submit a written statement setting forth a plan to pursue a body of work in a specific place over a period of at least six weeks. The purpose of the award is to enable the student to explore in depth a single place, and to have the experience of living in an unfamiliar landscape. The recipient will receive a $5,000 grant to fulfill their travel plans. They are invited to participate in the Photography Department's annual Alumni Panel the following spring, and hold an exhibition of the work from their travels.
