Creative Counterpoints is one of the longest-standing lecture series at MassArt. We were born in 2016 thanks to a Foundation Fellowship Grant. Since then, we have hosted annual groundbreaking conversations between the MassArt community and artists, writers, and other culture makers who live and work across intersections of geographies, languages, identities, as well as genres, disciplines and creativity.

The 2023 Creative Counterpoints speaker is renowned artist Vincent Valdez, on the occasion of the first book-length study of his work, In Memory/In Memory. Vincent Valdez blends large, representational paintings—the scale of which recall Western traditions of history painting and mural painting and cinema—with contemporary subject matter. Valdez will discuss the scope of his work and the materials that comprise In Memory/In Memoria. The artist will then be in conversation with the audience, and especially with students.
