Alebrijes Opening Reception

The Brant Gallery Presents "Alebrijes," works by Jacobo y María Ángeles.

Jacobo and María are two artisans from San Martín Tilcajete, located in the south of the Mexican Republic in the Central Valleys region of Oaxaca State. Their workshop has been producing the tonas and nahuales, known world wide as alebrijes, for over 20 years.

Jacobo and María use Mixtec and Zapotec iconography for their pieces in a unique style they have developed over many years. Jacobo and María's objective is to make the Zapotec culture known through the figurines they create. At the workshop, the members are constantly proposing new ideas for carving and decoration. In doing so, they are expressing their imagination and strengthening their creativity, which is essential to the development of all human beings.
