  • Magdalena Riendeau, BFA Painting '23
  • Hannah Rust, BFA Painting '23

The purpose of the George Nick Prize is to encourage emerging artists who create two-dimensional works — through observational abilities, drawing skills, and the understanding of the role of tone and color — that can be recognized in terms of subject and an emphasis on forms of realism. The 21st annual George Nick Prize Competition took place on Friday, April 28 & Saturday, April 29, 2023.

The prize is awarded on the basis of merit, upon the discretion of the jury. The current total prize amount is approximately $12,000, which is split between the selected winners.

The competition is open to all current MassArt students (undergraduate, graduate, and Continuing Education), but is restricted to works done in drawing, painting, and printmaking.

A jury led by MassArt Professor Emeritus George Nick and including Richard Raiselis, Catherine Kehoe, and Meg White reviewed all submissions and selected the winners.

The jurors selected works from each reciepient, which will be exhibited in the Tower 1 Gallery and West Tower Lobby from May 22 through June 9, 2023. Please stop by and take a look!
