About the Venue

Art on the Plaza will occur on the Museum’s Arne Glimcher Plaza located outside, directly in front of the Museum. The Plaza is fully accessible, paved, and accessed from public sidewalks with curb cuts. The Museum’s lobby, studio, and restrooms (with changing stations) will be accessible during this event, however the exhibition galleries will not be open.

Join us this summer for a deep dive into the 2026 Campus Compact Programming & Partnership Impact Award winners. This session, you will hear from the sparc! ArtMobile program. Since 2011, sparc! the ArtMobile—a program of the Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP) at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt)—has brought the power of art and design directly into Boston’s neighborhoods. Featuring our boldly painted and retrofitted van, sparc!’s mobility, visibility, and accessibility bring creativity to the street level, creating intergenerational spaces for learning, connection, and joy.

Powered by MassArt students and staff, sparc! partners with local artists, libraries, and community organizations to offer free, hands-on art programs that deepen communities’ engagement with the arts and respond to neighborhood needs for expression and connection. Every project is co-ideated and co-designed with community partners, guided by local insight, shaped by the people and places we encounter, and brought to life by MassArt students—ensuring relevance, accessibility, and shared ownership. sparc! has traveled hundreds of miles, built thousands of relationships, and demonstrated how art, grounded in love and public purpose, serves as a powerful tool for civic engagement, neighborhood collaboration, and social connection.

Meet the Speakers

Ekua Holmes

Ekua Holmes, (she/her), joined the Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP) in 2010, drawn by its mission to connect MassArt to surrounding neighborhoods. She helped shape what became sparc! the ArtMobile—a community-driven van that delivers creative experiences across Boston, “igniting art and design in the neighborhood.”

Holmes believes everyone has something to teach and something to learn. From Mattapan to Jamaica Plain and beyond, sparc!’s intergenerational approach welcomes participation from community members ages 2 to 92.

As Associate Director of CACP and Director of sparc! the ArtMobile, Holmes emphasizes showing up, listening deeply, and building with people, not for them. A lifelong Roxbury resident and practicing artist, she uses art and design as tools for memory, activism, and collaboration. Holmes received her BFA in Photography from MassArt. Her creative journey includes photography, painting, design, curation, community advocacy, and most recently as an illustrator of children’s books and muralist.

She is also the founder and lead artist of the Roxbury Sunflower Project. Now in its eighth year, the project distributes free sunflower seeds and plants mini gardens in neglected and overlooked places, nurturing not only flowers, but seeds of resilience, beauty, and joy. Holmes’ legacy is rooted in purpose: building bridges, honoring local wisdom, inspiring young artists, and leading with vision, curiosity, and heart.

Isabelle Higgins

Isabelle Higgins (she/her) is a Boston-based artist and community educator. She currently works as Program Manager for sparc! the ArtMobile, an initiative of the Center for Art and Community Partnerships at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt).
Isabelle earned her BFA in Painting from MassArt and has exhibited nationally. Her painting practice is rooted in storytelling, and through her community work with sparc!, she encourages participants to share their own stories through art. She is dedicated to uplifting and collaborating with local artists from a wide range of backgrounds, highlighting them as both creatives and educators, and emphasizing how art can create mutually beneficial care and connection within communities.

Growing up in Boston, Isabelle developed a deep connection to the city and its neighborhoods, inspiring her dedication to making art accessible and empowering for all communities.

She is passionate about sparc!’s mission to create cross-cultural, multigenerational programs that reflect and respond to the communities she collaborates with. She has led numerous painting workshops for participants of all experience levels, fostering inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and inspired. Alongside her intergenerational work, she also co-develops programming specifically for youth and seniors, always aiming to connect people through creative expression.

Jess T. Dugan is an artist whose work explores identity and the complexities of the human condition. While their practice is centered around photography, it also includes writing, video, sound, drawing, and installation. Their work is regularly exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of over seventy museums.

Charlotte Cotton is a curator and writer who explores photography and visual culture. She is the author of key books that chart photographic practices in this century, including Photography is Magic (2015) and The Photograph as Contemporary Art (2004).

This will be a discussion between photographer Jess T. Dugan and writer Charlotte Cotton in regards to their Love Pictures collaboration, published by Radius Books in 2026.

Love Pictures is centered around a series of conversations between the two focusing on core themes that inform Dugan’s practice, including gender and identity, family and politics, writing and language, the book as object, and the dynamics of the exhibition space.

These initial dialogues then prompted subsequent conversations with others in Dugan’s and Cotton’s respective communities: friends, colleagues, mentors, and subjects of Dugan’s work—including Dawoud Bey, Kelli Connell, and Dorothy Moss, among others. Transcriptions of these intimate and in-depth exchanges are woven with the first comprehensive survey of Dugan’s work in book form.

Audrey Sands is the Richard L. Menschel Associate Curator of Photography at the Harvard Art Museums. She specializes in twentieth-century photography in the United States, with a focus on political conditions, pedagogy, avant-garde practices, and image circulation. Sands has published extensively on the artist Lisette Model. Her exhibitions include The Way We Never Were: The American Professional Photographers Collection (2026-27), Farewell Photography: The Hitachi Collection of Postwar Japanese Photographs, 1961–1989 (2022) and Freedom Must Be Lived: Marion Palfi’s America, 1940–1978 (2021). She has previously held curatorial positions at the National Gallery of Art and the Center for Creative Photography, and she holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University.

Poets Antonio Ochoa & Sara Deniz Akant

Antonio Ochoa was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He is the author of Small Sargasso Mountains / Pequeñas cordilleras de sargazo (Nightboat, 2026), as well as two previous collections of poetry, pulsos and El toro de Hiroshima. He is the host of the podcast Texts For Nothing: Conversations with Poets.

Latest interview about new book

Sara Deniz Akant is a poet, educator, and performer. She is the author of three books — most recently, Hyperphantasia (Rescue Press 2022), which was a New York Times book of the year, a Boston Globe book of the year, and won the Massachusetts Book Award in poetry. She is also the author of Babette (Rescue Press 2015), winner of the Black Box Poetry Prize, and Parades (Omnidawn 2014), winner of the Chapbook Prize. She teaches poetry as a Professor of the Practice at Tufts University, and helps run the Kan Yama Kan reading series in Brooklyn.

Abdulhamid Kircher (b. 1996) is an artist from Queens, New York. He was born in Berlin to German and Turkish parents, and immigrated with his mother to the United States at the age of eight. His work is a living archive of place and people, as it is also a dedication to the language of photography, the mechanics and aesthetic possibilities of the form. Through his devotion to classical forms of image making and the radical experimentation required for each of his subjects, his process bridges the idea between document and narrative. He received his BA in Culture and Media from The New School in 2018 and his MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego in 2022. His debut monograph Rotting from Within published by Loose Joints was released in 2024 on the occasion of his first solo exhibition at carlier | gebauer. His project To Be Held By The Earth received the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2025/2026 and he was awarded the Hamburger Bahnhof Studio Award in 2026. His second monograph New Genesis published by Loose Joints is set to release in the spring of 2026. Abdul currently lives and works between Berlin and New York.

Martin Kollar, born in 1971 in Žilina, former Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), studied cinematography at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. He works as a photographer, cinematographer, and film director, and lives between Paris and Bratislava.

Kollar has received major international awards and grants, including the Prix Elysée and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, the Slovak National Gallery, the Martin-Gropius-Bau, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Musée de l’Elysée.

Kollar has released several photobooks, including Nothing Special (2008, Actes Sud), Cahier (2011, Diaphane), Field Trip (2013, Mack), Catalogue (2015, SNG), Provisional Arrangement (2016, Mack), and After (2021, Mack).

His work is included in major public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fonds national d’art contemporain, the Centre national des arts plastiques, the Slovak National Gallery, and the Musée de l’Elysée.

As a cinematographer, Kollar has collaborated on several acclaimed films, including 107 Mothers (2021), Koza (2015), Velvet Terrorists (2013), Cooking History (2009), and 66 Seasons (2003). As a director, he made 5 October (2016) and Chronicle / Letopis (2025).

Sheida Soleimani (b. 1990) is an Iranian-American artist, educator, and activist. The daughter of political refugees who escaped Iran in the early 1980s, Soleimani makes work that excavates the histories of violence linking Iran, the United States, and the Greater Middle East. In working across form and medium—especially photography, sculpture, collage, and film—she often appropriates source images from popular/digital media and resituates them within defamiliarizing tableaux. The composition depends on the question at hand. For example, how can one do justice to survivor testimony and to the survivors themselves (To Oblivion)? What are the connections between oil, corruption, and human rights abuses among OPEC nations (Medium of Exchange)? How do nations work out reparations deals that often turn the ethics of historical injustice into playing fields for their own economic interests (Reparations Packages)? How may the layering of memory and familial history both report fact, and produce a reckoning with the intimate resonances of a geopolitics of violence (Ghostwriter)? In contrast to Western news, which rarely covers these problems, Soleimani makes work that persuades spectators to address them directly and effectively.

Soleimani’s work is held in permanent collections including the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, MIT List Visual Art Center, and Kadist Paris. Her work has been recognized internationally in both exhibitions and publications such as The New York Times, Financial Times, Art in America, Interview Magazine, among many others. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Soleimani is also an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Brandeis University and a federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
